Primary Care Model for Assessing and Treating Mental Health for Secondary Students in Pakistan

Background

Adolescent mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression, affect 10-20% of youth in Pakistan, yet early intervention is hindered by limited resources and stigma. Schools present a unique opportunity to address this gap. This project introduces a culturally sensitive primary care model for mental health assessment and intervention at a girls-only secondary school in Islamabad, providing much-needed support for students, parents, and teachers.

Objectives

Screening: Identify mental health issues using culturally appropriate tools.

Interventions: Provide CBT and counseling for mild to moderate cases.

Psychoeducation: Educate parents, teachers, and students on mental health awareness and care.

Sustainability: Train educators and peer support workers for long-term impact.

Anticipated Impact

Improved Well-being: Enhance mental health outcomes for students.

Reduced Stigma: Increase awareness and acceptance of mental health care.

Scalability: Create a model for replication in other schools.

Community Support: Strengthen collaboration among students, parents, and teachers.
